ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Post Office was closed due to law enforcement investigating a suspicious package around 12:45 p.m. Thursday. Atascadero Police Department, Atascadero Fire Department and San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department are on the scene.
1:08 p.m. update — Robot being sent into the post office. Law enforcement is asking people to stay away from the area.
1:49 p.m. update from City of Atascadero — On Thursday, July 23, at approximately 11:22 a.m., the United State Post Office in Atascadero recognized a suspicious package. The post office immediately reached out to the Atascadero Police Department. Upon arriving at the scene and assessing the package, APD evacuated the Post Office immediately. With an abundance of caution and concern, APD contacted the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Bomb Task Force to come in and analyze the package. The US Post Office, located at 9800 El Camino Real in Atascadero, will be closed until further notice. This incident is under investigation and no further information is available at this time.
3 p.m. update from the City of Atascadero — The suspicious package found earlier at the Post Office has been confirmed that it is not an explosive device. The scene has been turned back over to the Post Office.
