ATASCADERO — On Friday, May 21, at 9:44 p.m. Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded to a residential structure fire at 10025 El Camino Real #68.
Initial reports indicated that there was a fire inside of the structure. Prior to arrival, additional information was gathered that all occupants were able to exit the structure; however, two cats remained inside.
Upon arrival, crews found a single-story, single-family mobile home with heavy smoke showing from the front door and windows at the front of the structure. A rapid interior fire attack was made, and it was determined that a fire had originated in one of the bedrooms and had spread to the adjacent bedroom and hallway. Due to high heat, heavy smoke conditions, and unorthodox furniture placement, the interior fire crews had difficulty reaching the seat of the fire.
During interior fire operations, both of the missing cats were located and removed from the structure; both were found deceased. Full extinguishment of the fire took approximately 20 minutes from the time of the alarm, with no injuries to firefighters. The emergency resources used for the incident included six fire engines, one command vehicle, one ambulance, and three police officers.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) crews administered medical treatment to one of the residents for smoke inhalation. Fire crews remained on the scene for salvage operations and investigation for approximately 2 hours. The cause of the fire still remains under investigation.
