20-Acre Blaze Prompts Evacuations, Threatens Homes in Mutual Threat Zone
ATASCADERO — Firefighters from CAL FIRE, Atascadero Fire Department, and neighboring agencies continue to battle a vegetation fire that broke out Saturday afternoon near 6705 Llano Road in Atascadero, threatening nearby structures and prompting swift evacuation orders.
According to reports, Atascadero Fire Chief Casey Bryson stated that the fire is believed to have started from a backyard barbecue. The flames quickly spread to the grass behind the structure and then moved up the hill behind the house.
The fire, which ignited around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday June 28, rapidly spread through dry brush and hilly terrain, growing to approximately 20 acres. Multiple homes in the area were placed under mandatory evacuation orders as flames approached residential properties.
Fire crews are also focusing efforts on areas of concern along Corriente Road and Balboa Road, where the fire threatened to expand overnight. As of Sunday morning, containment is estimated at 35%, with visible smoke continuing to blanket the hillsides.
No injuries have been reported, and the extent of property damage is still being assessed.
Authorities are urging residents to remain alert, follow evacuation notices, and avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to work safely. Updates are being provided regularly by the San Luis Obispo County Fire Department and the City of Atascadero.
This is an ongoing situation. We will update this report as more information becomes available.
