Event will feature flyover, presentation of colors, and wreath laying in honor of fallen veteran Sherman Smoot

ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation is hosting its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 29, at 11 a.m. at the Faces of Freedom Memorial located at the corner of Portola and Highway 41. The ceremony will last approximately one hour and will honor the sacrifice of our military heroes.

Attendees will enjoy the popular flyover by the Estrella Warbirds, as well as the presentation of colors by the Cal Poly ROTC, accompanied by the Central Coast Pipes and Drums and the Welcome Home Military Heroes Flag Line. The Atascadero High School Choir will provide music, including the national anthem.

The ceremony will also include an invocation and benediction by Pastor Aaron Smith of Hope Lutheran and a speech from Commander Brooks. At the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees will witness the laying of a wreath in memory of veteran Sherman Smoot by his wife and daughter.

Taps will be uniquely played on tone chimes by the Joyous Voices for Jesus group, marking the end of the ceremony. There will be no barbecue following the event, and attendees are encouraged to take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by our military heroes and their families.

The Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation is grateful for the service of all military members, past and present, and honors their memory with this annual ceremony. The foundation invites the community to attend and participate in this special event.
