Volunteer mentors and mentored children will team up to play flag football

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY — Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County announced its upcoming Flag Football Community Day, scheduled on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Laguna Middle School, 11050 Los Osos Valley Road in San Luis Obispo.

Volunteer mentors and mentored children will team up to play flag football, and invite local community members to join them in cheering them on. Admission is free, and the event will include food trucks, a nonprofit resource fair, and various off-field games.

The mentors and mentees playing flag football together isn’t just about sports; it’s about fostering meaningful relationships and positive experiences. Studies have shown that mentorship through sports significantly impacts a child’s development, building confidence, teamwork skills, and a sense of belonging. By engaging in activities like flag football, Bigs and Littles create bonds that go beyond the field, leading to lifelong connections and personal growth.

“We’re excited to bring our community together for a day of fun and camaraderie,” says Stacy Salame, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County. “Events like these not only highlight the importance of mentorship but also showcase the incredible impact it has on our youth. We encourage everyone to come out, support our Bigs and Littles, and experience the power of mentorship firsthand.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County is dedicated to providing children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported, one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Through events like the Flag Football Community Day, it continues to fulfill our mission of igniting the potential within every child in San Luis Obispo County.
