ATASCADERO — The Atascadero Police Department (APD) will hold a special ceremony to honor the life and heroism of 11-year-old Jose Gutierrez, who tragically lost his life in a hit-and-run accident earlier this year. The event will occur on Tuesday, April 22, at  5:30 p.m. at the steps to Atascadero City Hall, 6500 Palma Avenue.

In recognition of his extraordinary courage and selflessness, Jose will be posthumously awarded the Honorary Lifesaving Medal — one of the highest honors the department can bestow. This award reflects his final, heroic act: warning a friend to get out of the path of an oncoming vehicle that had veered off the road, an action that ultimately saved a life. Though only 11 years old, Jose dreamed of becoming a police officer. In his final moments, he lived out the profession’s core values — courage, duty, and the protection of others — exemplifying what it truly means to serve.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of this brave young boy,” said Chief Dan Suttles, Chief of Police for the City of Atascadero. “But we are also deeply moved by his heroism. He may never have worn the badge, but he showed the heart and spirit of a true officer. We are honored to call him  one of our own.”

The ceremony is open to the public, and all community members are invited to attend in support of the family and to help celebrate the life and courage of this remarkable young hero.
