ATASCADERO — Firefighters quickly contained a grass fire in a field at the corner of West Front and San Rafael roads Tuesday morning, the City of Atascadero reported.

At 9:26 a.m. on Tuesday, June 30, Atascadero Fire and Emergency Services responded to a vegetation fire at the corner of West Front Road and San Rafael in an open field next to a residence.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire approximately 25 feet by 50 feet in size, burning in seasonal grasses with the potential to spread up to 10 acres with one residence that would have been immediately threatened.

The fire was burning at a moderate rate of spread through a field that was weed abated. Even though weed abatement had taken place, the fire was moving quickly toward structures.

Fire crews were able to stop the forward spread of the fire immediately and began mopping up hot spots and cutting a hand line around the perimeter.

The fire was contained to a half-acre and in less than 10 minutes. Fire crews remained at the scene for approximately one hour for overhaul.

Atascadero Police Department, Templeton Fire and Emergency Services, Cal Fire, and Atascadero State Hospital responded to the fire. Due to the quick turnaround in stopping the fire’s forward movement, Templeton and Cal Fire were canceled before arrival.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
