Olitha Inea Carmack, age 54, of Atascadero, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 27, with her husband, John Valdez, of Pomona, by her side. Olitha — lovingly known as “Oly” to her friends and family— was a lifelong resident of San Luis Obispo County. Born in Atascadero to Marina (Cabrera) and Tom Carmack on Nov. 9, 1964, she attended Lewis Avenue Elementary and, as a child, played on the streets and hills of her hometown. During her teenage years, she hung out with friends, but also enjoyed the orchards and creek bottom on her grandparent’s farm. She was a 1982 graduate of Atascadero High School and stayed in touch with the many friends from her class and various jobs she held in the area. Keith Allen Morgan, age 56, passed on in his loving wifes' arms in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, July 4, 2019, after a 7-month-long battle with cancer. Keith was born Sept. 15, 1962, in Paso Robles. His first job was learning how to pour concrete when he was just 12 years old. He attended Monterey Bay Academy High School and after graduation he worked for Stemper Brothers Construction for several years, performing many different skills of construction. He then started working for Union Asphalt, working his way up to Plant Manager. Bonnie Lyn Wilkins, a native of Atascadero, passed away July 7, 2019, peacefully at her home with her family at her side. She was 83 years old, born at the Atascadero Hospital on Nov. 19, 1935, and raised on the Historic Eagle Ranch. Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents Meredith and Luceille Gates. She is survived by her husband Bob of 67 years, and her four children, Kerrie McNerlin (Tom) of Idaho, Joyce Wilkins (Gary) of Atascadero, Jim Wilkins of Creston and Jane Hilty (Bob) of Santa Barbara. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Renae, Valarie, Richard, Ashley, Riley, Lisa, Jeff and Markee. The above mentioned have produced 12 great-grandchildren. Benito Dusi was born on Jan. 2, 1933; just as Prohibition was ending, but also in the midst of The Great Depression. His life and his career spanned an important era of California wine history from 1933 to 2019. During his lifetime, Benito was an important figure in the rebirth of the California wine industry. Benito’s story begins with his parents, Sylvester and Caterina Dusi, who immigrated to the United States from Northern Italy in the early 1900s. Vernon LeRoy Mathison passed away July 11, 2019, at Vineyard Hills In Templeton, Calif. He was born on July 26, 1929, in Gilroy, Calif., and came to Paso Robles in 1949 as Assistant Manager of the Purity grocery chain. There he met the love of his life, Ellen Lundgren who was the daughter of Esther and Eric Lundgren, a local gunsmith. They married in 1950 and lived briefly in Santa Cruz. They moved back to Gilroy for a short time and on Oct. 1, 1953, Vern accepted an open position on the Paso Robles Police Department. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stefano Riboli, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and the beloved patriarch of San Antonio Winery. He passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family on July 3 and went to be with our Lord at the age of 97. Stefano was born in Los Angeles on Sept. 8, 1921, and lived there until his parents returned to Italy when he was three years old. He was raised in the small mountain village of Berzo San Fermo, just north of Bergamo, Italy. As a young boy in Berzo, Stefano grew up a shepherd boy herding “Alpina” brown cows in beautiful Alpine mountain pastures during the spring and summer months. Robert (Bob) Lee Galli passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 20, 2019. He was 91 years old. Born Feb. 18, 1928, in San Luis Obispo, Bob grew up in Atascadero where he graduated in 1947 from Atascadero High School. It was there, through mutual friends, that he met the love of his life, Diane (Lawrence). They married on July 1, 1950, and lived inseparably ever after. They moved to the Los Angeles area to raise their children and then back to Atascadero in 1975 to the property owned by the Galli family since 1927. On May 16, 2019, from the comfort of his own bed and surrounded by his family Colonel William (Bill) Hatch ultimately conquered the brain cancer he had valiantly fought since September of 2018. Bill or “The Colonel” as his friends referred to him, graduated as a “Distinguished” West Point Military Academy graduate in 1972. He went on to earn a Masters in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech and another Masters in National Security from the US Naval War College. Rhonda was born in Knob Noster, Mo., Whiteman Air Force Base, on Aug. 21, 1958, where her "Daddy" was stationed. She made San Luis Obispo County home when her family moved here from Idaho in 1976, after her graduation from high school in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Rhonda gave birth to her son, Jeremy Joyce on Nov. 21, 1985. He was her pride and joy. She always said, "I just love that boy!" This didn't mean that she was easy on him. It is with great sadness that Lt. Col. Glen D Gibson passed away peacefully on May 14, 2019, in Paso Robles, Calif. Glen was born in Rattan, Okla. on May 16, 1933, to farmer parents, Emerson Milton Gibson and Loyce Brock Gibson. He was the oldest of three. Sister Carolyn preceded him in death, and sister Barbara lives in Lancaster, Calif. In the early 1940’s the family briefly moved to Bend, Ore., then relocated to San Miguel, Calif. While Glen’s father worked at Camp Roberts Army Post, Glen sold newspapers to recruits, employees, and visiting USO entertainers. He was proud to have once received a one-dollar tip for a 5-cent newspaper from Red Skelton. Glen’s photo is in the Camp Roberts military museum as a WWII paperboy.... more

Muriel Ann (Boutin) Winslow, age 78, of Paso Robles, Calif., died at 2:53 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2019, at Twin Cities Community Hospital, of a sudden illness, surrounded by her loving family. Muriel was born in Fall River, Mass., on Jan. 6, 1941, to parents Rose and Albert Boutin, and has two older brothers, Normand and Roland Boutin. At age 18, Muriel relocated with her family to California. Soon thereafter, Muriel married the love of her life, Winton Dwight Winslow. They made their home in Reseda, Calif. In 1973 they moved to Valencia, Calif., where they lived for most of their lives. Muriel and Winton raised four happy, successful children with constant, unwavering love. Upon retiring, Muriel and Winton relocated to Paso Robles, Calif. to be near their daughters and grandchildren. Don grew up around Visalia and Arcata, Calif. He graduated high school in 1951 and married his first wife Helen to which he had three children. He served eight years in the United States Air Force just after the Korean War. Clarence Dayton Hillman III was born in 1920 and died in 2019. A year short of a century, passed away May 10, 2019, peacefully in his sleep at 7:15 a.m. from complications of health issues in Paso Robles where he had lived with his family since 1947. Clarence whose nickname was Couche was loved by all his family and friends. Robert J. (Bob) Kelley, Jr., 73, of Grants Pass, Ore., passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019. He was born on Oct. 9, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio to Bette (Leinhart) and Robert John Kelley, Sr. and was the second of four boys. The family moved from Cleveland to Los Angeles in 1946 where Robert Kelley, Sr. was the announcer for the newly relocated Los Angeles Rams football team. Bob attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks and Pierce Community College before being accepted into the California Highway Patrol Academy. Hugh L. Thomas died peacefully on April 24, 2019, in Creston, Calif. On March 1, he celebrated his 90th birthday with many friends and family. He lived a long, full richly rewarding life. Hugh was born in Pacific Palisades, which was largely country then, on March 1, 1929, in his parents home. He was the only one of his family to be born in the U.S. as his parents, brother and sister immigrated from Wales years before. His father, Lewis Thomas was a tailor and had one of the three businesses in Pacific Palisades at that time. He tailored and made clothing for many in the movie industry, including his good friend, Will Rogers. Edward Clifton "Pete" Darley, 84, died April 16, 2019, at Frederick, Md., near his home in Mt. Airy. Pete was born in San Saba, Texas, on March 9, 1935, to his loving parents Voyd Lee and Marion Edward "Pete" Darley. He was a graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School in San Antonio, Texas, where he played trumpet in the school's band. Pete married the love of his life, Barbara Frances Jones, in 1958. They were married forty-two years, until her death in 2001. Pete and Barbara were devoted to each other and were proud of their children, Jaynie and Bill. In his younger years, Pete was an avid race car driver, winning multiple championships. He loved his Austin Healey, MG, classic Mustang, and NASCAR. He was a U.S. Army Reserve veteran, Worthy Patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Atascadero Chapter No. 344, and a member of the Free and Accepted Masons since 1962, including the Thaddeus Sherman Lodge No. 196 in Paso Robles.... more

William Edward "Bill" Darley, 56, died April 12, 2019, in Wilmington, N.C. He was born in Los Angeles on Sept. 27, 1962, to his loving parents Barbara Jones and Edward C. "Pete" Darley. The family moved to San Luis Obispo in 1966 where Bill attended C. L. Smith Elementary School. In 1974, they relocated to Atascadero where Bill worked at Williams Brothers grocery and graduated from Atascadero High School in 1980. Bill was affable and loving. He was also a natural and gifted athlete, especially enjoying golf, water skiing, baseball, and cycling. His lifelong obsession, though, was motocross. Jean Filer Burns, 90, of Atascadero died at her daughter’s home on April 20, 2019. Jean suffered from a stroke on Aug. 5, 2018, which impacted her ability to live independently. Though still quite healthy, her paralysis from the stroke caused her to require 24/7 care. After being released from rehab, she began spending most days in her own home with caregivers, and spent all evenings, nights and some days in the homes of her two daughters and their husbands, whom she loved like sons. She awoke Saturday morning, April 20, feeling nauseous, and by God’s grace and mercy, she passed peacefully into His loving arms within less than two hours.... more

After a two-year battle with cancer, Patrick William O'Neal, age 60, died at his home in Morro Bay, Calif., of stage 4 melanoma, on April 19, Good Friday. Born in Hanford, Patrick graduated from Hanford High School in 1977, then attended College of the Sequoias, Visalia, before transferring to Fresno State. He began his independent insurance agency at age 23, running a very successful business for the next thirty years, retiring at age 55 in 2012. Larry Eugene Arnett was born in Lincoln, Neb., and passed away at the age of 77 on March 24, 2019. Larry graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 1959 and graduated from Cuesta College in 1968 where he received his AA. Upon graduating, he worked for a short time for Montgomery Ward and as a house painter. He then moved on to a career spanning 33 years for the State of California which included The Atascadero State Hospital, The California Men's Colony, and the Department of Corrections at Susanville. Arthur Woodrow Amsk was born in Livingston, MT on Dec. 28, 1927. He passed away in Atascadero, Calif., on March 12, 2019. He was 91. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Florence Amsk; brother William; sisters Lucille, Retha, and Arlene; wife Margaret Eva Beck, and step-children David and Laura. Arthur grew up during the Great Depression and learned to fish and hunt at an early age. He spent many teenage years at the Taylor Ranch and hunted the nearby hills. Dora Harriet McKusick

Dora Harriet McKusick, 97, was born in Orcutt, Calif., and went home to be with her Lord on Feb.18, 2019. Dora was the youngest of six girls born to John and Clara Cullen and moved to San Luis Obispo County when she was 6 years old. About this time, Dora received her first harmonica, an instrument she played joyfully until the end. Dora graduated from Atascadero high school in 1940. During World War II Dora worked at Fort Ord rebuilding carburetors, generators and starters for the war effort. Dora came back to SLO County in 1946 when she married Joseph McKusick. They started married life living with Joe’s parents at the 8 Mile House, an old stage stop just north of Cuesta Grade. In a short time Joe and Dora built their own home on the family property, and there Dora remained even after Joe passed in 2005. In 2010 Dora decided it was time to “’move to town” and moved into Atascadero Christian Home, where she made new friends and was always busy.... more

Paso Robles native Gary David Smith passed away Thursday, Feb.7, 2019, at the age of 76. Gary was born March 17, 1942, to Eunice Nicklas Hoffman and Clark Smith. Gary was the grandson of Clark Sherwood Smith and Olive Wright Smith, founders of Smith’s Sporting Goods, located in the 1200 block of Park Street in Paso for almost 100 years (1893-1987). Gary grew up in Paso Robles and shared stories with his kids and others about hitchhiking around San Luis Obispo County as a young boy, riding his bike to Cambria, climbing Morro Rock (which is now a criminal act), and doing most of this unbeknownst to his parents as long as he was home in time for dinner. He graduated from Paso Robles High School in 1960 and graduated from Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo in 1964, majoring in Mathematics. After college, he went to work for Rocketdyne, which built the F-1 engine. He never ceased to be amazed about the power of the rockets and his time at Rocketdyne. Five F-1 engines were used in the Saturn V rocket that powered Apollo 11 to the Moon.... more

Leon Herschel Herman of San Miguel, Calif., passed away on the 18th of January 2019 at the age of 90. Leon was born in Hollywood, Calif., and attended grammar school in Tarzana, Calif. Following high school, Leon attended Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, during which time he, along with three others, founded the “Throttle Merchants” while racing roadsters at Saugus Raceway. Nelson “Jim” Alexander died at home in Atascadero, surrounded by family on Sept. 28. Nelson was born in 1934 in Yettum, Calif. One of eight children born to a sharecropper and housewife who farmed in Visalia. At a young age he moved to Los Angeles and worked for National Cash Register as a draftsman where he assisted in the drawings for the first computer and also where he met and married his wife of 62 years, Barta Jo (Holland) Alexander. In the early ‘60’s they relocated to Yucaipa, Calif., where Nelson saw an opportunity to start a small business. He cleverly designed a proprietary system and then contracted with the town to read their water meters and continued to do so until 1978 when he moved his family to Atascadero and contracted with the City of Atascadero to read their water meters. ... more

Marjorie Wells Crutchfield, 95, of Paso Robles, Calif., passed away peacefully on Oct. 7, 2018. She was at home with her son and daughter by her side. Marjorie was born on Jan. 21, 1923, in Gainesville, Fla., the daughter of Orian Pardue and Agnes Ida Lea Wells. She met the love of her life while working at the University of Florida. This human dynamo was born on March 2, 1929, in Venice, Calif. under the zodiac sign of Pisces the fish. He lived up to his sign and became a great fisherman; not only of Salmonidae but of people, too. At age 89, after a long and beautiful life, the Lord called Arthur Warlick Blankenship Junior home. He died peacefully in Auburn, Calif. on Sept. 23, 2018. He was the oldest of three children born to Arthur and Senta Blankenship. Richard Benitez passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Oct. 6 after a battle with thyroid cancer. Richard was born on Aug. 6, 1943, in San Bernardino, Calif. to Salbador and Concha Benitez. He grew up in Fontana, Calif. and later graduated from Fontana High School in 1961. Richard attended night school at Chaffey Community College while working several jobs and being a single parent. After graduating with an AA he transferred to Cal Poly Pomona where he met his wife, Sharon. He graduated in 1971 and then continued his education at CSU Fullerton receiving his master’s in school administration. He went on to work for Pomona, South Whittier, and Desert Sands Unified School Districts before moving to Paso Robles in 1986. Richard became the Director of Student Services in 1990. She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Spokane, Wash. to Harold Luther and Gladys (Caudill) Newby. She was a 1950 graduate of Lewis & Clark High School in Spokane and continued her educational pursuits which included receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1959 from Eastern Washington College of Education, a Master’s degree in Education in 1965 from the University of Washington, and in 1988 she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Neuropsychology from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Darlene was an educator in several school districts including Falls Church, Virginia, Carmel, Paso Robles, and Atascadero, California as well as in Denton, Texas. Eric Alexander Hanes, 35, passed away on July 28, 2018 in Fayetteville, N.C. after a three and a half year struggle with GIST cancer. He was born in October of 1982 in Los Angeles and grew up in Templeton and Paso Robles, Calif. Following graduation from Templeton High School, Eric enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Ground Radar Systems Technician, eventually rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant. While stationed at Minot AFB, N.D., he met and married his then wife Emily Kamrowski in 2009. Eric proudly and honorably served his country with three deployments, one to Afghanistan, and while later stationed at Ramstein, Germany; he served two deployments to Africa. Eric took great pride in being in the military and felt a strong sense of accomplishment in serving his country where he made many friends and planned to serve until retirement. ... more

With Erika’s passing, the world has lost a warm and generous soul and those who knew her, will miss her heartbreakingly beautiful smile. Erika Messer was born on April 10, 1979 in Sioux City, Iowa to Lloyd and Mary Messer. Although, Erika did live for a time in LaCrosse, Wis., she considered Sioux City her home. Throughout her childhood, Erika maintained a passion for skiing, especially with her father, swimming, acrobatic feats on her trampoline, as well as numerous other activities. Eileen Marie Kimmerle passed away at French Hospital in San Luis Obispo on July 8, 2018. Eileen suffered from End Stage Kidney Failure. She was surrounded with love from family and friends. Eileen was born on Oct. 17, 1961, in Lansdale, Pa. to her parents William “Bill” Kimmerle and Wilma Catherine (Gordon) Kimmerle. Gilbert Hector Dekocker, a former meat business owner and butcher, passed away peacefully at his home on July 9, 2018, at the age of 84. He is survived by his wife, Jocelyn Dekocker; his daughters, Philly Dekocker and Susie Johansen; and his niece, Linda Cools. Gilbert was born in Dienze, Belgium on Jan. 26, 1934. The second World War brought hardships to him, his siblings, and his parents. A couple members of his family were forced to labor and concentration camps. Hugh Lynn Pitts Jr. was born on May 6, 1958, and passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2018, at the age of 60. He suffered a heart attack while flying home from vacationing in Mexico. His last days were spent fishing with friends and enjoying life. Hugh was born in Houston, Texas, to Hugh Sr. and Aniela (Goldthwaite) Pitts. The second oldest of four children, he grew up with sister Linda and brothers, Frank and Jeff. In the early 1960’s, Hugh Sr. used his signing bonus from the Houston Oilers football team to purchase his first piece of property in East Texas. The siblings worked alongside their dad on the properties that he would purchase, improve and sell. They spent the weekends hunting and fishing. Hugh attended Cypress Fairbanks High School and studied Ag Business at Blinn Junior College. He inherited his father’s love of football and was a two-year starter for the TCU Horned Frogs, dad’s alma mater. Clifford Paul Torrey Jr. died at home Monday, June 25, 2018, surrounded by his wife, Antonia, four children, Jesse, Barbara, Austin, and Madalyn, and his daughter-in-law, Shaelah. Cliff, or Skippy, as his family called him growing up, was born in Linton, N.D. to Clifford and Evelyn. He and his five siblings, Mary Kay, Bill, Barbara, Paula, and Michele, grew up in LaMoure before the family moved to San Diego, when Clifford was 13. He attended Helix High School, where he ran cross country and forged lifelong friendships. At 21, he was drafted into the Army and received two Purple Hearts for injuries received in combat in the Vietnam War. After serving, Clifford moved to Atascadero where he lived until his death. Alan (“Captain Al”) Spievak passed away peacefully in Santa Barbara on Jan. 13, 2018, with his loving and supportive wife, Nelly Spievak, by his side and holding his hand to the end. Al passed a year after suffering a debilitating stroke. Al was born Aug. 14, 1942, in Los Angeles to Louis (“Red”) and Elsie Spievak and grew up in Cheviot Hills with his sisters, Marilyn and Sherry. He attended Santa Monica City College and San Fernando College of Law. Al was married to Danleigh Sarnoff in 1962, with whom he had two sons, Matthew and Jason. Al later married Nelly, the light and love of his life, in 1978. They built a wonderful life together and retired to Atascadero in 2007.
