Bruce Tuley

Life long resident and pioneer Bruce Tuley was born in Paso Robles April 24, 1927, to Ray and Fay Tuley, and passed away peacefully, following a stroke, on May 18, 2018, after celebrating his 91st birthday. He was surrounded by his wife Margie and his loving family. Bruce was a fourth generation Californian and was Pioneer Day Marshal in 2012, following in the footsteps of his Grandfather Jacob Tuley, Marshal in 1940, and Grandmother Jessie Tuley, Queen in 1950. Bruce grew up on the Estrella plains near Von Dollen Road, and rode his bike to the Pleasant Valley School. A reluctant star, he once sang Red River Valley on stage, but was so shy, he stood behind the curtain as he sang. He attended Paso Robles High School excelling in all sports, and in his senior year in 1945, he met the love of his life, Margie Lee Brown. After graduation, Bruce was drafted into the Army and would hitchhike home on weekends to see Margie. Fortunately, anyone traveling in uniform was guaranteed a ride.... more

Dr. Larry S. Hirsch, 68, passed away unexpectedly after a brief illness on April 22, 2018, at Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo. Born July 1949 to Robert and Ruth Hirsch in Los Angeles, Larry was the second born of four boys. He spent his growing up years in Whittier. He completed his undergraduate degree at UC Santa Barbara. He then went to Virginia for his master’s degree at The College of William and Mary. Larry completed medical school at the Medical College of Virginia where he also did his internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Winola “Winnie” Akers Hazard, 91, passed away on March 10, 2018, in Paso Robles. Born in Breckenridge, Texas on Oct. 27, 1926 she was the daughter of the late Edith and Jack Akers. Winola moved with her family to California in 1930. In 1933 her father went to work for William Randolph Hearst in Lockwood. In 1940 her family moved to Pozo, where her father became the foreman for the J.F. Goodwin ranch, where she met her future husband John C. Hazard. They were married in 1944 in Paso Robles. After WWII they lived in San Luis Obispo, while her husband was a student at Cal Poly. In 1948 they moved to Santa Maria, where Winnie was involved with the Minerva Club. In 1954 they moved to Stockton, where she was involved with the Dameron Hospital Auxiliary, Stockton Children’s Home, Haggin Museum, and SJ County Mental Health Assoc. She loved to play bridge, dominos, and snow ski. After her husband died in 1993 she moved to Paso Robles.... more

John was born in Meshoppen, Pennsylvania on Jan. 2, 1950, to Wayne and Irene Ervine. The Ervine family moved to Waterford, in 1951, before settling in the Atascadero area in 1956. John joined the Marine Corps in 1968, while still in high school, but waiting to enter active service after graduation from Atascadero High School. John reported for service in July 1968 at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. Upon graduation from boot camp John was assigned a Military Occupational Specialty of 0844, Field Artillery Fire Control Man undergoing additional training before assignment to serve in Vietnam. Upon arrival in Vietnam in January 1969, John was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 11th Marines in An Hoa, a Marine Combat base located 17 miles south and west of Da Nang. Frances P. White passed away in Atascadero on Feb. 24, 2018 and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born August 27, 1923 in Pleasant Valley Township, Eau Claire County, Wis. to Peter and Laura (Insteness) Pederson. Frances went to school nearby and grew up on her family’s farm. During World War II, she rode the train to San Diego and worked as a riveter on Boeing airplanes. There she met the love of her life, Frank J. White. They married in April 1944 and their marriage lasted until Frank’s death in 1988. After Frank’s service in the Army, they made their way to Hanford, where they raised three children on a family farm that they shared with Frank’s brother William and Frances’s sister Borghild, at whose wedding Frank and Frances had met.... more

Hansel (Hank) Lewis Burns, age 91, of Atascadero died at home on Feb. 26, 2018. Though diagnosed in 2013 with esophageal cancer, it had remained inactive after treatment until the past few months. Hank was born on Nov. 4, 1926 in Union County, Ga. and grew up in Blairsville, Ga. on the family farm with his parents and six siblings. After serving in the US Army, he moved to Taft in his early twenties. It was there he met Jean Filer, who was working at the local mercantile. Alan (“Captain Al”) Spievak passed away peacefully in Santa Barbara on Jan. 13, 2018, with his loving and supportive wife, Nelly Spievak, by his side and holding his hand to the end. Al passed a year after suffering a debilitating stroke. Al was born Aug. 14, 1942, in Los Angeles to Louis (“Red”) and Elsie Spievak and grew up in Cheviot Hills with his sisters, Marilyn and Sherry. He attended Santa Monica City College and San Fernando College of Law. Al was married to Danleigh Sarnoff in 1962, with whom he had two sons, Matthew and Jason. Walter Leighton Cook passed away in his beloved Atascadero on Aug. 1, just shy of his 94th birthday. He was born Aug. 17, 1923 to Lucien and Eulah Parks Cook, on his mother’s family farm in Tiptonville, Tenn. Shortly after birth, they went back to the Cook ranch in Magdalena, N.M. that Leighton’s grandfather had homesteaded. His grandparents also owned some property in Atascadero because his grandmother had read about E.G. Lewis’s vision of Atascadero, and in 1916 had bought some property on El Camino Real. She thought it would be a good spot for an auto campground naming it Camp Buena Vista. The name was later changed to Glen Oaks after the suggestion of author, Jack London.
