Gerald W. Walker 1951-2025

Gerald Wendell Walker, dubbed “Gerry Window Washer” by family and less printable names by “friends”, died on December 27, 2025, in his Santa Maria apartment. Doctors stated cause of death as natural causes, but we suspect he was just tired of everyone’s shit.

Gerry was born on January 26, 1951, the fourth child of William and Patricia Walker. Since they hadn’t learned their lesson, six more children followed, making ten total and a life of chaos and love.

One of Gerry’s greatest achievements was getting lost and found, one time at a bank, when a policeman brought him back with an ice cream cone. This proved to be a valuable lesson for him, because he got lost many more times, usually at the grocery store down the street, where no one noticed him stuffing his pockets with candy, in orchards, stuffing fruit in his mouth (which he adamantly denied with puffed out cheeks). He got so good at it, he even got lost and found a couple of times when he was in the army!! They weren’t as relieved to find him as Mom was. They still kept him, and he served in Vietnam. He was a proud veteran.

In the 1960s, Gerry could dance the Mashed Potato and the Funky Chicken just as well as James Brown. He had a dedication to making sure there was never a surplus of peanut butter, milk, or sweets in the house. Gerry loved the motorcycles he was always repairing and HATS…he wore hats throughout his life. He eventually graduated to a mobility scooter that the VA doctor made sure wouldn’t go too fast. He managed to topple over the sidewalk at the Starbucks later anyway, which was suspected as a ploy to garner sympathy and a free Caramel Macchiato. He will be greatly missed at the smokers’ gossip circle in the garden at the Terrace and the Starbucks down the street.

His professional life was as a mechanic, including the repair of helicopters in Vietnam, and he later took pride in having been a carpenter. He also took great pride in taking things apart, leaving behind an assortment of disassembled lamps, electronics, and a scooter. “Leave that alone, I’m going to fix that” was his mantra.

He is survived by eight of his siblings, multiple grandchildren, and his daughter, Michele Anderson. Preceding him in death were his eldest daughter, Stacee, his parents, and our sister, Judith Counts. His signature hat, an old misshapen Trilby-style hat that rarely left his head, has also survived. It had a life of its own and is suspected to stick around for a while, having outlived most of his friends.

There will be no service or funeral per his wishes. He will finally have the smoking hot body he always wanted, having been cremated. Those of us that knew him well know that he’s most likely hiking naked out at Star Route with his dogs Peaches, Willy, and Maya, stopping occasionally to smoke a joint or dance the Mashed Potato.

The Walker family will have a reunion to honor him out of state in the spring. However, there will be an “Okie-style” BBQ at the Atascadero Lake for friends locally who want to attend. Date TBA.
