Local Perspective: Fall fun, food, and festivities in Atascadero

Don't forget Bunco Night on Thursday, October 23, 6 p.m., at Kiwanis Hall, 7848 Pismo Ave., Atascadero. The fun-filled evening will be presented by The Questers and Atascadero Printery Foundation to benefit the restoration of the historic Printery building. Tickets are $25 and include food and beverages. There will be an opportunity take part in an exciting raffle. Costumes are optional, but add to the merriment!

Optimist Clubs of Paso Robles and Atascadero are planning for their 3rd Annual Festival of Trees on Saturday, November 22 form 2 to 7 p.m. at the Pavilion on the Lake, Atascadero. There will be a selection of uniquely decorated, 4 foot Christmas trees to choose from that will be raffled off to a lucky ticket holder. Each raffle includes a fully decorated tree and at least $300 worth of gifts donated by local merchants, businesses and individuals. There will also be a larger Bonus Tree that will include many more gifts for the lucky winner. Included with your $75 entry ticket will be access to the event and a barbecue dinner. Resilient Ones (formerly Resilient Souls) with Hosting Partners, Optimist International, are presenting the 2nd Annual Golf Tournament at Hunter Ranch Golf Course on Saturday, October 25th. This fundraiser directly supports aftercare programs for survivors, training initiatives for volunteers, and building a compassionate community.

The recipes this week are sure to please!

Slow Bones

Ingredients:

1 cup chili sauce

2 green onions, chopped

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes

1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke, optional

4 pounds pork baby back ribs

Directions:

In a large bowl combine the first 10 ingredients. Cut ribs into individual pieces; dip into sauce. Transfer to a 5-quart slow cooker; top with the remaining sauce. Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until tender. Serves 4

For breakfast or dinner, waffles are always a treat and what could be more fun than pumpkin waffles on Halloween!

Buttermilk Pumpkin Waffles

Ingredients:

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

2 large eggs

1 1/4 cup buttermilk

1/2 cup canned pumpkin

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Butter and maple syrup, optional

Directions:

In a large bowl, combine first nine ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, pumpkin and melted butter. Stir into dry ingredients just until moistened. Bake in preheated waffle iron according to manufacturer's directions until golden brown. Serve with butter and syrup if desired. Makes 6 servings

Note: To freeze, cool waffles on wire rack. Freeze between layers of waxed  paper in resealable plastic freezer bag. To use, reheat waffles in toaster on medium setting or microwave each waffle on high for 30-60 seconds until heated through. Enjoy!
